Sleeping Ugly (link to Amazon) has a nice twist on the classic fairytale.
Princess Miserella is beautiful on the outside but ugly on the inside. Plain Jane is the exact opposite. One day Miserella gets into a huff and rides from her castle, only to get lost in the woods. She soon meets a fairy in disguise and Plain Jane. When the fairy, tired of Miserella’s whining, throws a tantrum and breaks a spell, all three of them are put into a hundred-year sleep! In the end, though, everyone gets what they deserve.
This funny retelling of Sleeping Beauty may be for young readers, but Jane Yolen didn’t talk down or sound patronizing at all, something I definitely appreciated. The pictures by Diane Stanley added a pleasant touch to the story. All in all, I liked this book a great deal.
