Daily Prompt: Shiver

Rainy Day watermark version

shiver

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Hamlet (1.5.167-8), Hamlet to Horatio

sometimes

i get this shiver.

it starts at the back of my neck

and travels down

down

down

down

to the base of my spine.

it feels like something has gone terribly wrong

or

that something has gone terribly right.

oh, grandma says,

someone just walked over your grave.

i suppose for her

these shivers are just that:

a reminder of mortality

and nothing else.

but as for me

these shivers are a reminder

that despite everything i know about this world

it is  still only a tiny

tiny

part of the whole

and everything i’ve learned

or would learn

or could learn

still would not cover

every mystery left us

even the mystery

of a sudden shiver

in a warm room with no chill.
